About Us

Welcome to the website of the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the works of Tony Hancock.

‘’Tony Hancock was the comedian's comedian. When we were writing Hancock's Half Hour he told us; 'You're the writers, you write, I'm the comedian, I'll comede.' And boy, could he comede’’

-Ray Galton and Alan Simpson

‘Alan Partridge comes from a lineage stretching back to Tony Hancock’’

- Steve Coogan

‘This guy is such a genius!’

- Mark Hamill

What do we do?

Founded in 1976, the society has worked tirelessly to preserving and promoting the works of Tony Hancock. One of the most popular and influential comics of his age, his enduring legacy has inspired so many comedians performing today. Hancock's Half Hour, his 1950s radio and television sitcom written by Galton and Simpson, is still regarded as unsurpassed in the field of light entertainment.

Committee

Between organising events, negotiating book deals, cataloguing and archiving, making a magazine, recording a podcast, andmanaging the website, there's an awful lot to do! Fortunately, we've got a committee for that.

Events

Mick
Dawson

A society veteran, Mick has moved from managing the audio library to being part of the Dawson-Dream-Team. He and Ros are the reason every event goes off so smoothly.

The friendly face of the society, a new addition to the society she's taking on roles at every level of the society - we're already wondering how we did it without her!

Tim.jpg

Archives

Tim
Elms

A retired civil servant, Tim is one of our most dedicated members. Between managing membership, shipping, and maintaining the archive, he also tweets like a demon!

Ken.jpg

Treasury

Ken
Clarke

Not the mayor of London, Ken keeps the books squeaky clean and ensures there's always enough to keep going with our mission - and that it's used well! Sorry, Martin, no Bali holiday!

Jon.jpg

Archive

Jonathan
Street

Until his partner, Nick, joined the team, Jon was delighted to be the youngest committee member! He uses his young-people skills to edit the podcast, manage our digital library, and loan out CDs to members.

What Ros Dawson can't organise isn't worth doing. With her husband, Mick, she has ensured a steady stream of amazing society events - and there's always more to come!

Nick
West

The newest committee member, he has taken over the magazine and the website, bringing THAS into the new millennium! Only a couple years late.

Want to send us a message? You can send one straight to the team here. We publish letters to the editor in The Missing Page, and we know Tim has a not inconsiderable fan club himself.

We're also always on the lookout for fresh help! Between keeping the society running and completing the archives, we'd be delighted to hear from you!

Or you can just let us know your favourite episode - we're a friendly bunch, so put pen to paper today!
