A History of Hancock Appreciation

The Tony Hancock Appreciation Society (THAS) was founded in 1976 by a group of dedicated fans who wanted to preserve and celebrate the memory and legacy of the beloved British comedian and actor, Tony Hancock. Born on May 12, 1924, in Birmingham, Hancock rose to fame during the 1950s and 1960s, becoming a household name in the United Kingdom through his work on radio and television.

Initially, the THAS focused on sharing information about Hancock's life and works among its members through a newsletter called "The Missing Page." Over the years, the society grew in size and scope, connecting fans from across the globe. It expanded its reach by organizing various events, including annual conventions, screenings of Hancock's films, and themed gatherings where members could meet and discuss their shared passion for Hancock's humor and wit.

In 1995, the THAS launched its official website, providing a platform for fans to access a wealth of information on Tony Hancock's career, including his radio and TV appearances, filmography, and even rare photographs. The website also offered a forum for members to discuss and reminisce about their favorite Hancock moments, helping to strengthen the community further.

Notably, Tom Dommett stepped down as the Editor of "The Missing Page" in 2022, transitioning to a role as a writer and researcher for the magazine. Nick West took over as the editor, and he also assists with audio restoration projects and manages the THAS website.

Today, the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society continues its mission to preserve and promote the legacy of one of Britain's most talented and influential comedians. With an ever-growing membership and a vibrant online presence, the THAS remains a thriving community dedicated to celebrating the life and works of the brilliant Tony Hancock.
